A group of aliens decides to test humanity’s potential by granting one ordinary person unlimited power. The person they choose is Neil Clarke — a school teacher with no particular history of consequential decision-making. The test begins. Absolutely Anything (2015) takes a premise that philosophy has been debating for centuries — what would a person actually do with unlimited power — and answers it with the specific honesty that comedy is uniquely positioned to deliver. Neil doesn’t immediately set out to solve world hunger or reverse climate change. Instead, he uses his powers for personal convenience, romantic advantage, and the kind of small-scale wish fulfillment most people would probably reach for first if they were being truthful about it. The chaos that follows is the natural consequence of unlimited power in the hands of someone who hasn’t thought through the implications of literal wish granting. Every instruction is interpreted exactly as stated rather than as intended. Every casual thought carries a cosmic consequence Neil didn’t account for when he had it. The comedy of this sci-fi comedy film lives in that gap — the distance between what a person means and what happens when the universe takes them completely literally. Beneath the science fiction setup and the escalating hilarity is something the film handles lightly but genuinely — the question of what responsibility looks like when the constraints that normally define it have been removed entirely. Power without limitation reveals character in ways ordinary circumstances never force out into the open. Funny. Imaginative. A science fiction comedy that earns its heartwarming conclusion through the chaos it builds to get there.
